His photos have appeared in many books on Stellenbosch and the Boland.
Willem Daniel Malherbe was born on 21 November 1940 in Stellenbosch.
His father was Isaak de Villiers Malherbe. Willem matriculated from Paul Roos Gymnasium in 1958 and studied at the
University of
Stellenbosch (BA in Philosophy and Psychology, 1961).
In 1966 he started a career as a commercial artist and since 1969 workes
part-time as designer and builder of houses. Since 1970 he has been involved as
an expert for the Drostdy Museum in Swellendam, and until 1972 at the
Stellenbosch Museum . He undertook a study tour of
museums, old buildings and archeological sites in
Europe (1973 -1974), returning to South Africa to design and create the Taal
Museum in Paarl (1975). Since 1976 he has been a graphical designer, mainly for
the Stellenbosch Museum, and has made miniatures of historical
buildings. From 1976 until 1990 he was part-time lecturer in Museum
Sciences at Stellenbosch University.
He has collaborated on many historical publications and made the Video, 'The
Stellenbosch Story: Half a Billion years in half an hour', which was translated
into German and French.
