Professor of Latin at Stellenbosch University, 1951 - 1981
François Smuts was born on 1 April 1916 on the farm Bontevlei, near Stellenbosch. He matriculated from Paul Roos Gymnasium, Stellenbosch, and
studied at the universities of
Stellenbosch (MA) and Utrecht (D Litt - Title of thesis: Die Etiek van Seneca).
He was lecturing Latin at Stellenbosch University since 1938. Professor from 1.7.1951 - 31.12.1981.
In 1943 he married Kotie Stander and they had three children. Frans Smuts died on 27 March 1987.
