Hendrik Tertius van Huyssteen was born on 23 September, 1910, at Knysna.
After matric from Montagu High School he studied at the University of
Stellenbosch (BA and BEd).
1935 - 1969: Teacher in German and English at Paul Roos Gymnasium in
Stellenbosch, was Assistant Master and later Deputy Director. He and his wife
were "parents" at the school's boarding house in the fourties.
1970 - 1975: served as Cultural Attaché at the South African Embassy in
Cologne and Bad Godesberg.
Ters van Huyssteen was awarded the Gold Medal of the Simon van der Stel
Foundation.
He was married to Miems Haumann (1938 -1992) and has two daughters (Annie Gagiano) and two sons. His wife died in 1992.
Cultural Activities:
Ters van Huyssteen was a founding member of Stellenbosch Museum, of its Board
of Trustees and of the Simon van der Stel Festival Committee.
He also served as chairman of the Simon van der Stel Foundation (Stellenbosch
branch). He was a member of the Stellenbosch Tercentenary organising Committee
and a member of the Board of the Huguenot Society.
He contributed to a weekly column, Die Papegaai sê, on Stellenbosch history in Eikestadnuus for many years.

literature.Ters van Huyssteen died on 4 June 2005, at Stellenbosch.
