Once over the helshoogte Pass, the lovely Zeven Rivieren house lies on the
Franschhoek side of the great mountain. It has a beautiful baroque gable and
was built in 1790 by Johannes Jacobus Hamman. The original owners, Jacob
Pleunis and Pieter Malmer were not Huguenots, hence the Dutch name of the farm.
The marked baroque influence on the gable reminds the onlooker of the gables of
Idas Valley, Haasendal, Digteby, Vredenburg and Morgenster and thus links all
six houses stylistically. The Zeven Rivieren Gable, however, is the loveliest
of them all.
