The original owner of the ground was J. J. Tesselaar, 1779. The house graces the lower slopes of Table Mountain near the Platteklip gorge outlet. It was built by Alexander van Breda, after acquiring the property in 1782. This is the date which should appear on the gable instead of the date 1724. Early this century, the house was damaged by fire but was properly restored in the late seventies. The house remained the property of the van Breda family until the later years of the nineteenth century. The house presently belongs to the state and is used as a ministerial dwelling.
