Meyer de Villiers
1913-1995Author of Afrikaans dictionaries and text books
Professor at the Department Afrikaans and Dutch,
Stellenbosch University, 1953 - 1978.
Meyer de Villiers was born on 15 January 1913 in Ficksburg, Orange Free State.
He attended school in Ficksburg, Den Haag and Bloemfontein, and studied at the
University of Cape Town (MA; DLit) and the Ryksuniversiteit in Utrecht and in
Berlin.
He lectured at the University of
Cape Town, before he joined Stellenbosch University as senior lecturer in 1947,
and was professor at the Department Afrikaans and Dutch, Stellenbosch
University from 1953 until his retirement in 1978.
Meyer de Villiers was especially interested in art, music and literature.He was
married to Suna de Villiers.Memberships:

Council member of the Michaelis Collection (museum) in Cape Town
Awards and Honours:
CJ Langenhoven Prize for Linguistics 1976
