S. M. Z. (Suna) de Villiers, neé Dreyer, was born on 25 May 1916 in Cape Town, where she grew up and attended Jan Riebeeck High School. She studied at Stellenbosch University, where she obtained a BA in Social work.

She was married to Meyer de Villiers, who was professor at the Department Afrikaans and Dutch, Stellenbosch University. They had a daughter, Clarissa.
The last 5 years of her life Suna lived in a retirement village in Swellendam where she passed away on 2 May 2007.
