Vergelegen, Somerset West
Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful farms in the Boland, Vergelegen has a
long history of famous owners. Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel spared
neither himself nor the coffers of the state. Such were his excesses that Adam
Tas, Henning Huising and other burghers petitioned the overlords of the Cape,
the Here XVII, to investigate the corrupt activities of the Governor. Van der
Stel was recalled to Holland and Vergelegen was divided and auctioned off. The
house itself, though ordered to be demolished, was saved in part. The present
graceful gable carries the date 1780.
