Marianna Wilhelmina Visser was born on 5 September 1957. She studied at Stellenbosch University ( BA 1978, BA Hons 1979, MA 1981, HOD 1981 and D Litt 1987) She taught Xhosa at the Rhenish High Girls School in Stellenbosch and lectured at the Department of African Languages, Rhodes University, Grahamstown (1982 - 87). In 1987 she joined Stellenbosch University as lecturer at the Department of African Languages and was promoted to assistant professor in 2001.
