Dine van Zyl was born 1953 in Robertson. Her father, Pon van Zyl, was a winemaker and the first manager of the Robertson Cooperative Winery.
She is an alumnus of Stellenbosch University. She was a radio
broadcaster and film maker of note and is today a writer and freelance
journalist. She has received various awards for her documentary radio
programmes and novels.
Dine is a keen cook and has published books on traditional Afrikaner cuisine. Each one was a first on the subject and led to the popular revival of
the food.
She was married to André Wagener until 2006.
Dine lives in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, Rooiels, with her husband, Graham McCleland, and the Alsatian, Dapper, and is involved in the conservation of fauna, fynbos flora and marine life. She is an authority on the traditional and culinary uses of the plants in her area.

Dine van Zyl is 'n oudstudent van die Universiteit van Stellenbosch. Sy was 'n
radio-omroeper en filmmaker van formaat en vandag is sy 'n skrywer en vryskut
joernalis. Sy het verskeie toekennings vir haar radio dokumentêre programme and
romans ontvang.
Sy woon in die Kogelberg Biosfeer Reservaat en is betrokke by die bewaring van
die fauna, fynbos flora en seelewe. Sy is 'n kenner van die tradisionele en
kulinêre gebruike van die plante in haar gebied.
Dine is 'n ywerige kok en het drie boeke gepubliseer oor tradisionele
Afrikaanse kos. Elke boek was 'n eerste oor die onderwerp en het gelei tot die
gewilde herlewing van die kos.
Sy was getroud met André Wagener, hulle was 'n een-hond gesin.
