Andries Nel was born on 14 May, 1923, at Worcester, where he attended school
and matriculated. He studied at Stellenbosch University (BA cum laude
1943, MA 1945 in Geography and DLitt 1951). Thesis: 'n Kartografiese studie van die vernaamste dorpe in Suidwes-Kaapland. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin, USA (1955/56,
1965)
He joined Stellenbosch University as Lecturer of Geography in 1947 and became
Professor of Geography (1959-1987) and Dean of the Faculty of Science
(1974-1987).
Memberships and professional activities:
1963: President of the Geographical Association of South Africa
1965: Carnegie bursary, visit to the Geography departments of foreign
universities
1966: Member of the Senate, University of Port Elizabeth
1972: Guest professor at universities in the USA
Founding member of Suid-Afrikaanse Fotogrammetriese Vereniging (Photogrammetic survey group)
Member of the SA Academy of Arts and Science.
Award: Stals Prize for Geography 1969
