Catherina Elizabeth (Trienke) Laurie was born on 10 May 1946 in Cape Town. She
grew up in Cape Town and in Stellenbosch, where her father, the acclaimed poet D. J. Opperman, was professor of Afrikaans. Her mother, Marié van Reenen, was also a writer.
Trienke studied History and Art at the University of Stellenbosch, where she
also attended her father's famous 'Letterkundige Laboratorium'. After receiving
a Teachers Diploma she taught at a school in Vredendal, Cape, for a year. In
1990 she continued her studies at the University for Christelike Hoër Onderwys,
in Potchefstrooms (BA Hons, cum laude, 1992).
She is a well known painter and has had several exhibitions.
Trienke is married to Dirk Laurie, a professor of Mathematics at
Stellenbosch University. They have five sons. Trienke and Dirk Laurie live in Somerset
West.
