Johannes Petrus Jansen was born on 5 September, 1923, at Tarkastad, where he attended school. He studied at Stellenbosch University (BA and DPhil) and at the University of Rhodes (MA, cum laude). He was professor for Africa studies at the University of Stellenbosch from 1967 - 1985, a faculty member of the South African Academy of Arts and Science and a member of the Africa Institute and the Geography Association.
