Hans Friedrich Heese was born on 26 July 1944, the last of 6 children and the only son of J A Heese. He studied at the University of Stellenbosch (BA, S.T.D., 1966, M.Phil Journalism 2001) and at the University of Cape Town (MA, History, 1974, Ph.D., History, 1976).
