Philip Crouse was born in 1927 in Pietermaritzburg. He attended school at Maritzburg College and studied at the Universities of Natal and Pretoria to become a teacher.
He also took singing lessons with Miem le Roux and he served as organist for the Voortrekker congregation in Pietermaritzburg.
He was a teacher at the Afrikaans Hoër Seunsskool and at Wonderboom Hoërskool in Pretoria.
He was married to the well known soprano, Nellie du Toit and they had four daughters.
He lived last in Stellenbosch.
