HS (Rika) Cilliers studied Afrikaans and Dutch at Stellenbosch
University, where she obtained a BA and MA (1972 -1975).
Since 1975 she lectured at the Randse Afrikaanse University. She taught
literature, Afrikaans as well as Dutch (also 17th century) and was an inspiring
teacher. She also often addressed reading circles on particular works of
Afrikaans literature.
Rika Cilliers was married to Mauritz Preller and they had a son, also Mauritz. On 27 April 1999 Rika died as a result of liver failure. She had been suffering from depression for a long time. At the time of her death she lived in Northcliff, Johannesburg.
Rika with the great Dutch author Willem Frederik Hermans (1926-1995) in March 1983 in Stellenbosch. She sent him this letter together with the 2 photos on this page.

Herkenning The following translation (by Bertie du Plessis) is an extract in Rika's fourth and last volume of poetry, Spirakel (Spiracle), pp 57- 58, and refers to the painting, titled "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" by Bertie du Plessis, 1990 airbrush acrylic on canvas 80 cm by 120 cm.
