Johannes Petrus Jansen van Rensburg was born on 23 August, 1911, at Tweedronk,
Standerton District and attended school in Standerton. He studied Classical
Languages at the universities of Stellenbosch (BA Latin
and Greek, 1932, SOD and MA in 1934, all cum laude, DLit 1943: The relative strength of the most important Oriental religions and their
influence on Roman life up to the end of the third centurty A.D. With an Abe Bailey bursary he continued his studies in London (MA
in Classical languages, cum laude, 1938) for two years.
1947-51: Professor of Classical languages at the University of Stellenbosch
1951-1976: Professor of Greek
Jansen van Rensburg was a member of the South African Academy for Arts and Science and a member of the Classical Association of South Africa. He died on 21 November, 1980.
Awards: Academy Awards for Drama translations 1948 and 1963, Poetry translations 1965 and (posthumously) for Prose translations 1995
