Professor of Old Testament Studies at the University of Stellenbosch, 1950 - 1979
Pieter Adriaan Verhoef was born on 25 April 1914 in the Lichtenburg District where he underwent private tuition. He studied at the Universities of Potchefstroom (BA, MA, cum laude, 1935 -38), Stellenbosch (MTh,cum laude) and Amsterdam (DTh, cum laude) Thesis: Die Vraagstuk van die Onvervulde Voorsegginge in Verband met Jesaja 1-39, 1950.
P. A. Verhoef was Professor of Old Testament Studies in Stellenbosch from 1950
- 1979.
In the sixties he visited the USA five times: as guest of the United
States-South Africa Leader Exchange Program, INC, and twice as guest
professor of the Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia (he was
offered a professorship twice by this institution but he did not want to leave
Stellenbosch). He taught Summerschool at the University of Chicago in 1967.
He was a member of the Bible translation association and worked on translation
of the Bible in 1983 and the Verwysingsbybel from 1992 - 1998.
At the occasion of his retirement an edition (1 1980) of Ned Geref Teologiese Tydskrif was dedicated to him.
Pieter Verhoef was married to Rita Krüger for 58 years and they had a son and
two daughters: Ricus, Hester and Adri. His wife died in 2002.
He was married to Elsa Dijkman (née van der Merwe) in 2003. P A Verhoef died at the age of 98 on 18 January 2013 at Stellenbosch.
