Author of several school textbooks
Professor of Didactics at Stellenbosch University and Dean of the Faculty of Education until 1979

John Francis Alexander (Jannie) Swartz was born on 4 September 1914 in Graaff-Reinett. He studied at the Universities of Rhodes and Stellenbosch (MA, DPhil in Psychology, 1952). He enjoyed sports and played Rugby in the Stellenbosch University's first Rugby Team, when Danie Craven was the captain.
He served his Alma mater in Stellenbosch for 26 years and retired in 1979.
An authority on indigenous music, he was a member of the International Society for African Music. He was also a member of the SA Orchid growers Society.
Jannie Swartz was married and had three sons. He died on 11 June 1981, at Stellenbosch.
