C.J. Swanepoel was born on 20 February 1895 in Aberdeen. He attended school in Paarl (Boys High) and studied at Stellenbosch University, (BA 1920 and BEd1922). He was the first primarius of the MacDonald Student House.
1923 - 1947: Teacher at Malmesbury High
1948 - 1965: Co- editor of Die Woordeboek van Afrikaans (WAT) and co-author of the Verklarende Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (HAT) and of the Verklarende Skoolwoorddeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (SKAT). He retired in 1965.
