Adolf Paul Gerhard Söhnge was born on 10 November 1913. He attended the Boys
High School in Worcester. From 1931 he studied at Stellenbosch University (BSc en MSc cum laude) and from 1939 to1940 at Harvard University,
USA, where he obtained a PhD with a thesis on copper depositions around
Messina, Transvaal.
From 1935 until 1945 he worked as geologist at the Department of Geological
Survey, Ministry of Mining, and explored areas around Middelburg, Witbank,
Nelspruit,
Barberton, Potgietersrus, Messina and the Richtersveld.

A P G Söhnge discovered the mineral (named after him), Söhngeite (Ga(OH)3).
He was married to Maria Desiree Grobler in 1946 and hey had two
daughters. He was the younger brother of Wilhelm Ernst Heinrich Söhnge
(27.05.1909), a minister at the NG church in Stellenbosch, who contributed
compositions to church music and compiled the songbook for choirs, 'n Nuwe Lied
Award: Havenga Prize for Geology 1975
