J du P. (Canis) Scholtz studied at the then Victoria College in Stellenbosch
from 1917 (BA 1919, MA 1920).
He was professor of Afrikaans and Dutch at University of Cape Town from 1934
until 1965.
He continued to study for two years at the University of Utrecht in Holland, where he obtained a PhD. Title of his thesis: Die Afrikaner en sy taal 1806-1875, which he published as his first book in 1939. Two years later he published his second book on the terminology of South African plants and animals. Between 1963 and 1980 he wrote several books on Afrikaans linguistics.
J du P Scholtz had a famous art collection which he bequeathed to the Stellenbosch University Museum, 310 works of art. He wrote several books on artists like Strat Caldecott (1970), DC Boonzaier, Pieter Wenning (1973) and Moses Kotler (1976).
