Hendrik Johannes Samuel Rall was born on 22 June 1938 in Parys, Orange Freestate. He studied Afrikaans and Medicine at the Universities of Potchefstroom, Bloemfontein, UNISA, Pretoria (BAhons in Afrikaans and Dutch, 1964, MB 1969) and Stellenbosch, where he obtained a PhD in medicine in 1977.
He also studied and worked in the USA ( 1969-1975 and 1973-1975).

As a medical doctor Henk Rall published articles on reproductive physiology
