J J (Koos) Oosthuysen was born in 1916. He studied at the University of Stellenbosch (BA 1936, SOD 1937).
He taught school in Cape Town and Upington and was head at schools in Kenhardt and Swellendam.
From 1967 until his retirement in 1981, he served as the personal assistent to three rectors: HB Thom, Jannie de Villiers and Mike de Vries.
