Gerhard Louis Friedrich Hartwig was born on 11 February 1914 in Worcester where he attended school at the Hoërskool Carnavaron.
He studied at the Universities of Stellenbosch (BSc in Forstry), Wageningen (Holland) and München (Dr.oec.publ.).
G. L. F. Hartwig served as professor in Wood Technology at Stellenbosch University from 1950 - 1979.
