Guillaume François Cillié de Bruyn was born on 18 February 1940, in the district
of Barkly West, and matriculated from Bonnievale High School. He studied Mathematics
at Stellenbosch University (B.Sc. Hons) and at the University of
Cambridge, where he obtained a PhD. He was the first to receive the Kanseliers Medalje (Chancellor's Medal) of Stellenbosch University.
He is married to Yvonne and has a daughter and two sons.
